What is California?
The state of California is the most populous in the United States, with a population of 40 million residents. It is the third largest state in the union (after Texas and Alaska) and covers an area of 424,000 sq km (a size comparable to that between Italy and France).

The History of California
California has had settlements by indigenous tribes for over ten thousand years. The first European settlement in the area was by Spanish missionaries belonging to the Franciscan order who first established Mission San Diego de Alcalá, from which the city of San Diego got its name.
- The Franciscans established missions across the state that became the nuclei of the important cities in California, named after the saint from the city of Assisi in Italy.
- California joined the USA in 1846 following the Mexican-American War. The southern part remained in the hands of Mexico, which is known as Baja California.
- About two years later, in January 1848, gold was discovered near the state capital Sacramento, leading to an intense westward migration known as the Gold Rush.
- This migration multiplied the state's population many times over, mostly working-age men (including many immigrants from East Asia who came for the construction of the railroads).
- The Gold Rush eventually led to a significant growth in California cities and made the state the most populous in the Union.

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
The iconic Los Angeles airport is one of the largest and most important airports in all of North America. It's considered the second busiest airport in the USA (after Atlanta's airport) and the third busiest in the entire world. LAX, as it's affectionately known in popular culture, is located near downtown Los Angeles, between Inglewood and Playa Del Rey Beach, right by the 405 freeway.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
San Francisco's main airport lies on the bay about twenty kilometers south of the city center. - The three parks were designated as nature reserves thanks to the efforts of John Muir, an American ecologist of Scottish descent who worked politically to preserve the unique nature of the Sierra Nevada range. They were declared as parks around 18 years after the declaration of Yellowstone Park in Wyoming.

Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is one of the most popular ski and vacation spots in the western United States. The clear and high lake was formed by the retreat of a glacier in the Sierra Nevada range, above the Eldorado Valley, the cradle of California's Gold Rush. The lake straddles the border between California and Nevada, a short drive from Carson City and the gambling city of Reno. In summer, the lake's beaches serve as a popular vacation destination, and in winter, the lake is considered one of the highest-quality ski destinations in the United States.
In the ridges above the lake, you'll find legendary ski resorts like Palisades Tahoe, Heavenly, and Northstar California. Around the lake, there are famous natural sites and parks such as the pastoral Emerald Bay, the stunning Sand Harbor Beach, and the mighty granite rock of Cave Rock, perfect for hiking. On the Nevada side, a few large casinos serve as the favorite entertainment spots for travelers and vacationers by the lake.

San Diego Padres
The Padres are the only professional sports team left in the city after the Dodgers (baseball) and the Chargers (football) moved to Los Angeles. They play in the professional American baseball league, the MLB. The team was founded in 1969 and has made it to the World Series twice, but lost both times. The name comes from the founding fathers, but in Spanish, it refers to the Franciscan missionaries who founded the city and other California cities. The team plays at Petco Park stadium, located in the southern part of downtown, with a capacity of 42,000 spectators.
