Denver, the capital of Colorado, is the central city located at the vast junction between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain range. The city’s nickname is The Mile High City, named for its elevation — exactly one mile above sea level. Denver sits right where the mountain range begins to rise from the east, at the edge of the Great Plains, beneath the highest peaks of the Rockies.
Denver is a very liberal city — the most liberal in this vast area considered the heartland of America. Its downtown is packed with entertainment venues and attractions, and it serves as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park above it and to the ski resorts of Vail and Aspen.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is one of the most visited parks in the world. Not far from Denver, the capital of Colorado, lies the rugged natural area of the Front Range, one of the mountain ranges that make up the Rockies, with peaks soaring above 4,000 meters.
This high-altitude area was first accessed in the early 20th century with the opening of Highway 34, also called the Ridge Trail Road, which crosses the range toward the Colorado River valley.
Estes Park, a small town situated at 2,300 meters elevation, serves as the base for exploring the park. It turns into a lively city during the summer, offering a wide range of hotels, restaurants, and entertainment options. Nearby are spectacular natural sites, charming alpine lakes, hiking trails of various difficulty levels, and all the fun of classic American outdoor nature.
