6 Guy's tips for a perfect stay in Yellowstone Park

Yellowstone Park is the first park declared as a nature reserve in the world and one of the most fascinating places to visit for its geological formations and nature. The volcanic park offers an exhilarating experience with geysers, sulfur pools, rare geological rock, rivers carving giant canyons, and wildlife observation. Nearby, Grand Teton National Park offers a unique experience of the Rocky Mountains peaks. The park spans a vast mountainous area in the northwestern corner of Wyoming. Yellowstone Park and its neighbor, Grand Teton Park, are far from the major cities of the USA, which means you'll need to stay near the parks during your visit.

  1. The Nature of Accommodation in Yellowstone Park – Yellowstone Park offers a rustic mountain accommodations experience with all the trimmings of American-style lodging. This approach is based on consistent standards in both hotels and motels. Near the park, you'll find a variety of motels and hotels that provide a diverse lodging experience, from comfortable family accommodations and resort services to more basic, but much cheaper, options.
  2. Staying in Lodges within the Park – Accommodation inside the park is limited to a few designated areas like Canyon Village, where you’ll find several lodge hotels rated at two and three stars. In the northern part of Yellowstone Lake, commonly referred to as Lake, there are also some good lodges with three-star hotel standards. Staying inside the park is definitely an experience and the hotels aren't bad at all, though they can be pricey. The main downside of staying within the park is that after dark, there's not much to do, and it's really not recommended to roam the park (not by car and certainly not on foot).
  3. Accommodation in West Yellowstone – West Yellowstone is the western gateway to the park and the closest town to it. During the summer season, there's a high demand for accommodation in the town, so it's essential to book well in advance, or cross your fingers for some luck. West Yellowstone is right at the western entrance to Yellowstone Park and offers plenty of restaurants and some evening activities. It's the ideal place for lodging when visiting the park. You can also stay at the northern entrance, in Mammoth, the park's logistical center. Mammoth is technically already part of the park and features a large spa hotel and several restaurants.
  4. Hotels in Nearby Cities to Yellowstone – Yellowstone Park is located in some of the less populated parts of America. The closest large cities to the park are the ones in southern Montana along Highway 90. Cities like Bozeman, Livingston, and Billings may not have impressive downtowns (or really much to do), but they offer motels, restaurants, and everything else you'll need for your trip.
  5. Staying in Jackson and Teton Village as a base for exploring Grand Teton National Park – The Grand Teton is like the little sibling of Yellowstone National Park which, if not for its legendary neighbor to the north, would stand out as a popular attraction in its own right. Most folks who visit Grand Teton are coming from Yellowstone, but it’s also an excellent spot to set up your base. Jackson, to its south, serves as the southern gateway to both parks and just above it lies the big ski resort of Teton Village, offering plenty of hotel options for a snowy winter retreat. These hotels also operate in summer as a base for park tours.
  6. The season – Yellowstone National Park is mountainous, and access is limited throughout the winter. The prime time to visit Yellowstone is summer, when the park is bustling with visitors, including traffic jams. The park is accessible from late spring until the end of September. You might still catch snow and freezing weather in April or October.
